Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine (WCMM)

Linköping University, the University Hospital and the County Municipality of the region Östergötland, has received a generous donation from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg to launch one of the four Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine (WCMM) nodes in Sweden. Our node will focus on the medicine-technology interface, and build upon our existing strengths in research within medical technology, materials science and bioengineering.

The remarkable progress that we have seen with respect to our understanding of biology and medicine during the last 25 years, and the substantial development of new diagnostics and therapeutics is not primarily the result of progress in only one specific research area. Rather, it is the dynamic and increasing interplay between medicine, biology, chemistry, technology, materials science, bioinformatics, computation and imaging that has fueled much of the discovery process. It is reasonable to assume that we have only seen the beginning of this interactive medicine-technology avalanche.

Linköping University (LiU)

Known for its unique interdisciplinary approach, Linköping University (LiU) is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 27 000 undergraduates, 1,300 research students, 4 000 employees and an annual turnover of 3,5 billion SEK. Celebrating its 40th year anniversary 2015, LiU is ranked in the top 30 (#26) in the world among the 16 000 universities less than 50 years old.

Linköping University Hospital and Region Östergötland (RÖ)

The University Hospital in Linköping, which constitutes the main centre for health care in Region Östergötland (RÖ) and provides highly specialized care for three counties
(1 million inh.), has 600 patient beds and 4 900 employees. The University Hospital is and has been ranked as one of the top hospitals in Sweden regarding quality-of-care.

The research groups at WCMM focuses on three fields – neuroscience and signaling, regenerative and reparative medicine and biomedical engineering, bioelectronics, biomedical imaging and biosensors.

Steering committee

The steering committee governs WCMM at LiU. The committee's competence spans a wide range of scientific areas, ranging from molecular structure to stereotactic brain navigation, human whole-body imaging and clinical medicine.

The major task of the International Advisory Board at WCMM is to provide guidance regarding international recruitments and aid in evaluations of recruited scientists, together with the respective faculties’ recruitment and promotion committees.

WCMM

We are looking for new group leaders

WCMM in Linköping will recruit a total of 15 new research teams. Currently, we are looking for four new Group Leaders (tenure-track) at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor.

The Wallenberg Centre – research at the medicine-technology interface

The new Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine at Linköping University was officially opened on 8 December. The centre is one component of a major initiative in Swedish research in the field of life sciences.
