Abstract

In Swedish there are two productive ways of expressing the passive: a morphological passive formed by adding –s to the tensed form of the verb; and a periphrastic form using the verb bli together with a perfect participle. Sometimes the two passive forms are interchangeable but in many cases they are not. This paper discusses some of the factors that determine when the different passive forms are used. Condition of use; semantic; syntactic and lexical factors all play a role. By looking at the distribution of the passive forms in the Swedish PAROLE corpus of 25 million words we found that the animacy of the subject was an important factor. bli-passives are used significantly more often in Swedish when the subject is affected by the action and/or has some control over the action.
