Abstract

This paper summarizes the up-to-date findings from an ongoing research project about the implementation of lean production. Lean production is used in many different organizations around the world. It has its origin in manufacturing but nowadays principles of the concept are applied to administrative processes and service organization. The purpose of the present study is to develop knowledge of how the concept of lean production has developed over time. Particularly; based on empirical research; we aim to elaborate on the following research questions: How has the definition of lean production changed over time? Has the regional areas of implementation (countries) changed over time? In which areas are lean production implemented and used? (e.g. manufacturing; distribution; service...) What are the trends over time?
