Abstract

Through a study of the 49 collections of poetry that were published and marketed by the established publishers in 2008 this article discusses in what ways Swedish poetry of today practices and reflects upon the notion of poetics. After an initial discussion of the criteria of material selection and a brief look at the concept and history of poetics as a genre and term; it examines the collections and finds certain recurring themes and traits. For one; a majority of poets choose to use endnotes or other means of meta-commentary. The topos of invocatio can also be found in quite a few collections; such as the ones by David Vikgren; Katarina Frostenson and Marie Lundquist. Furthermore; the fusion of language and body is still a very important theme in contemporary poetry; a way of metaphorically making language and lan-gaguage art organic. The article also examines at how the poetry published in 2008 deals with the question of mimesis; or the relationship between word and world; and how play; along with humour; is used as an apparent creative method. The tree as poetological metaphor is also brought to the fore; and the abundant echoing of academic literary theory is examined and discussed. In conclusion; it puts the year 2008 in a historic perspective; and suggests that the often viewed as modernist self-reflectiveness and meta-approach in poetry still is an im-mensely strong theme in contemporary writing.
