Abstract

Scandinavian and European states alike are faced with agrowing elderly population. Health factors leading tosensory loss; dementia and increasing physical frailty canpose barriers to independent living for this population. Research initiatives and implementation projects have cropped up at many levels of government with similar goals of seeking ways of addressing the diverse needs of the elderly citizen segment. Often projects find it difficult to gain aholistic understanding and may not succeed in obtaining the benefits of the larger European research agenda. This paperdevelops a “roadmap” or clarification of the larger European research agenda. It is our aim that local initiativesmay be better able to apply the lessons learned from other research and be made aware of the knowledge resources available through the international European research community at large.
